How long does my hair have to be to get Sisterlocks™/Microlocs?

You need 1 1/2 -2 inches of natural unprocessed hair. You don’t have to cut your hair if you have a perm. You just need 1 1/2 inches of natural hair to transition into Sisterlocks™.

Will Sisterlocks™/Microlocs break my hair since they are so small?

When properly installed and maintained, Sisterlocks™/Microlocs should not damage your hair. In fact, they can promote healthy hair growth by minimizing the manipulation of your hair, reducing the likelihood of breakage.

What happens if I am not consistent with retightening my Locs?

Several issues can arise when inconsistencies of retightening.

Excessive Slippage or unraveling, Weak Roots and Breakage, Marrying or joining of Locs, Inconsistent Appearance, Longer and More expensive sessions, Risk of needing repairs or reinstallation.

What are the best Practices on Maintaining healthy Locs?

Retighten every 4-6 weeks. Set regular appointments and communicate with your consultant if you’re running behind-they can help you manage your schedule or assess any damage early.

What are Sisterlocks™?

Sisterlocks™ are a trademarked hair locking technique created by Dr.JoAnn Cornwell in 1993. Sisterlocks™ are very small and uniform in size, created using a precise grid system.

Sisterlocks™ has to be installed by a certified Consultant(or Trainee). There is a specific interlocking pattern followed by a precise grid parting system. A special tool is required during installation, the install takes about 15-30+ hours depending on hair length/density. Sisterlocks™ are typically smaller and numerous than microlocs.

What are Microlocs?

A general term for small Locs not installed using the Sisterlocks™ method. Microlocs can be installed by a Loctician,DIY, or trained stylist ( no certification required). Parting and size vary-can be grid-based or freestyle. Microlocs can be started with braids, twists, coils, or interlocking. Microlocs are installed using regular tools or fingers, not Sisterlocks™ tool. Microlocs are typically more affordable .

Can I dye my hair before or after getting Sisterlocks™/Microlocs?

If you chose to dye your hair, you should do so BEFORE getting your Sisterlocks™ /Microlocs installed. Once Installed it’s recommended to wait until your locks are fully settled ( typically 6-12 months) before applying any more dye. The locking process can be interrupted by chemical treatments, and dye can make locks dry and brittle if not properly maintained.
